Instead, it offers a decidedly PG-13 take on the formerly all-ages witch heroine. This Sabrina reboot isn't tied to Afterlife or any other existing Archie series. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Afterlife With Archie kick-started the company's new "Archie Horror" imprint, and it was quickly followed up by Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Like Criminal: Last of the Innocent, it proved that there's a real market for Archie stories targeted directly to adult readers. Afterlife With Archie certainly had shock value working in its favor, but it's also a genuinely good horror comic that pays homage to classic EC Comics tales and various horror films. Things only get weirder and more violent from there. Afterlife With Archie opens with Sabrina using her magic to revive Jughead's loyal pet, Hot Dog, and inadvertently causing a zombie apocalypse. Afterlife With Archie What happens when you throw Archie, Pet Semetary and Night of the Living Dead into a blender? You get this blood-soaked, mature readers-only take on the Archie franchise. We can't help but think that the success of The Last of the Innocent has influenced Archie Comics as they've set about reshaping the direction of the company in recent years. The result is both the high point of Brubaker and Phillips Criminal run and, honestly, one of the best Archie stories ever written. Not only are Archie and his estranged wife clear analogues for Archie and Veronica, the normally gritty, hard-boiled art actually shifts to a very Archie-inspired style whenever the story flashes back to Riley's teen years.

Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips capped off the Criminal saga with a story focused on Riley Richards, a bitter, middle-aged criminal who pines for the simpler, more innocent days of his childhood in Brookview. Criminal: Last of the Innocent This mini-series isn't technically an Archie comic, but as it blatantly borrows the archetypes we figure it deserves a mention anyway.
ARCHY COMICS SERIES
The saga got a little more overtly dark with Archie's death, though even that managed to cap off the series with an optimistic look to Riverdale's next generation. It's a much more down-to-earth story about a boy who finally grows up and has to deal with all the real challenges and pressures and triumphs that come with adulthood. Both eventually dovetailed into the dark tragedy that is "The Death of Archie." Again, Life With Archie isn't dark in the same way Afterlife With Archie or Archie vs. In the other, he married Betty and became a struggling a musician. In one, he married Veronica and went to work for Lodge Industries. Life With Archie followed both divergent stories simultaneously.

This series grew out of the "Archie Marries Veronica" and "Archie Marries Betty" storylines from the main Archie series, both of which offered hypothetical takes on what might happen if Archie finally grew up and had to make a choice between his two eternal loves. 2010's Life With Archie managed to offer a darker take on the franchise without ever losing sight of Archie's wholesome charm. Life With Archie: The Married Life "Dark" doesn't always have to mean violent, gory or sexually charged. But even so, this brief team-up delivered a massive jolt to the Archie franchise and set the stage for plenty of weirdness in the decades to come. Unlike some later crossovers, Archie Meets Punisher avoided gratuitous violence and even found excuses to prevent Frank Castle from actually killing anybody. The comic even cleverly balances the two universes by having Marvel artist John Buscema draw the Punisher characters and Archie mainstay Stan Goldberg handling the Archie cast. In grand crossover tradition, Archie is first forced to flee from the bloodthirsty Punisher and then team up with his foe to rescue Veronica from Red. Unfortunately for Archie, Red was practically his doppelganger, and he just so happened to choose Riverdale as his hideout. This one-shot special saw Frank Castle strike a deal with the US government to hunt down a ruthless drug dealer named Red. Archie Meets the Punisher This infamous 1994 crossover offered an early taste of what's possible when the Riverdale crew cross paths with the less savory denizens of the comic book industry.
